ASUS to launch Eee-book reader this year?

According to DigiTimes, ASUS president Jerry Shen says he plans to launch an Eee-branded ebook reader by the end of 2009 at the earliest. That's a tasty nugget of news all on its own. However, what would DigiTimes be without adding some good ol' Taiwanese rumor-mongering? As such, they add that MSI is investigating the reader market as well. But that's just common sense, we don't need "industry sources" to tell us that manufacturers are looking for ways to make money in new markets now do we?

Given that September 9 is unlikely to finally reveal the fabled Apple tablet, this might be the nearest thing we have to it for a while yet -- and it has one other advantage: it's real. The iTab Mini is a mod project of the "more time and energy than sense" variety (our favorite kind) that melds together a 12.1-inch resistive touchscreen display with the remnants of an old PowerBook and a decidedly modern Core 2 Duo 2.16GHz, 2GB RAM, 160GB HDD spec. The outcome is, in a word, stunning. You can find a full run-through of the build at the read link.

Archos' Android-based A5S and A5H Internet Tablets outed by FCC?

You know those confidentiality agreements companies sign with the FCC to keep our prying eyes away? Well, Archos didn't sign one. The result is a treasure trove of information about its new A5S (model 7501) Internet Media Tablet and a whisper of the A5H (model 7502) to come. The A5S looks very much like the 4.8-inch Archos 5 we already know and uh, know. However, there is a slight redesign resulting in a new location for the speaker and headphone jack as well as the inclusion of a microSD slot and what looks to be microUSB. Given the emergence of this new model so close to Archos' Android launch event and the repeated mention of the 5-inch "Archos 5 Internet Tablet" in Archos' own Android AppsLib store, we're guessing this is the new Android device set for a September 15th announce. True, the single UI shot (pictured after the break) isn't vanilla Android (it's likely skinned a la HTC's SenseUI) but it marks a radical departure from Archos' current offering. The FCC tested 802.11b/g/n WiFi, Bluetooth 2.1+EDR, and an FM transmitter and receiver on the A5S while a user manual briefly mentions 3G data, although the FCC didn't test it. Perhaps that's the secret sauce inside of the A5H model 7502?

MSI debuts Wind Top All-in-One AE2010 desktop

MSI's just announced the Wind Top All-in-One AE2010 desktop -- a step up from the previous AE1900. The 20-incher boasts a 1600 x 900 touchscreen, an AMD Athlon X2 Dual Core CPU (an improvement over its previous Atom 230 / 330), onboard ATI Radeon 3200 graphics card, 4GB of DDRII 533MHz SDRAM, a 320GB hard drive, 6 USB ports, and a 4-1 card reader. This bad boy has a starting price of $649.99, and will be available next month.
